The most popular Gundam gets a special Comic-Con variant

Despite its massive popularity, the regular Nu Gundam of Gundam: Char’s Counterattack doesn’t have many toys these days. Especially when compared to its novel counterpart, the Hi-Nu Gundam. So it’s nice to see the original Nu Gundam getting a special variant for this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

The Nu Gundam is Amuro Ray’s vehicle of choice in Char Counterattack and is a mobile suit bristling with a variety of weapons. Designed by Yutaka Izubuchi, it was voted in Japan as the most popular mobile suit in the entire Gundam saga.

One of its most visually striking features are the fin funnels that extend over the left shoulder. These often tend to scale and some toys based on the design lean in that direction, due to the added weight. Fortunately, that’s not a problem here.

The figure itself has a slightly stylized sculpt and additional markings from the original Gundam Universe version from last year. Like this build though, it lacks a beam rifle, hyper bazooka, and shield, but makes up for that by having some solid heft to the face.

Other than that, the finned funnel configuration is mostly made of one solid piece, rather than individually separated units. That said, you do get a removable finned funnel, which is nice.

There is also a Beam Saber available, but this is also the primary Beam Saber for the backpack, and is missing the removable spare Beam Saber stored in the left forearm.

The plastic used in Gundam Universe toys is also a form of compressed PVC. This comes very close to the high-end ABS plastic used in the Robot Damashii figures. Granted, there’s ABS plastic hidden in these toys, but most of the figure is PVC.

This translates to the aforementioned weight, but you still retain most of the articulation seen in Robot Damashii figures. In short, Gundam Universe builds like this don’t compromise much, despite the lower price.

What’s the main point here is a very affordable version of the Nu Gundam to own. At $35, it’s a fraction of most modern versions of Robot Damashii or Metal Robot Damashii.

Considering this is pretty accurate for the host anime as well, it means you can own a decent Nu Gundam toy without breaking the bank.

If you want to pick up this Gundam Universe Nu Gundam figure, it will be available at the Tamashii Nations and Gundam booths at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

In the meantime, if you haven’t checked out yet Char Counterattack, so be sure to check out my review of the Blu-ray version. You can also play as the Nu Gundam in both Super Robot Wars 30 and Gundam Extreme vs Maxiboost ON.
