Hubballi toy train with Joshi and Shettar derails during inaugural run – The New Indian Express
HUBBALLI: Hubballi’s Mahatma Gandhi Park toy train carrying Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar and a crowd of BJP workers derailed on its maiden run, casting doubts over safety of the long-awaited project. No one was injured in the accident.
Overcrowding of the three-car train is believed to have caused the derailment, sources say. On Saturday, the revamped Mahatma Gandhi Garden, Indira Glass House, a toy train, musical fountains and a newly built puzzle parking lot costing Rs 25 crore were opened.
According to an official, Rs 4.2 crore has been spent on redesigning the train cars and replacing old tracks. In the past there was a similar incident and since then the service has been shut down. A train operator told TNSE that each coach can carry a maximum of six children.
But during the inaugural race, Joshi, Shettar, Deputy Commissioner Nitesh Patil and around 15 supporters of the two politicians were on the train. “We even warned them about the overload,” said another staff member. The overloaded train derailed in a curve.
After getting off the train, Joshi took on the officials. Asking them to prioritize safety and security, he said, officials should ensure that such incidents do not happen again in the future. Meanwhile, a senior Hubballi-Dharwad Smart City Ltd official said: “The real reason for the derailment will be identified. The train will soon be open to the public.
