Colt’s Closet teams up with Surfside Beach Chick-fil-A for toy drive

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Colt Galloway came up with the idea of helping patients at a children’s hospital in Columbia when he was 10 years old.

Colt has been going to Children’s Hospital every year for years. He has hemophilia and requires an annual check-up.

He said that once during the treatment he met a friend. This friend asked if he would be back the next day. At that time, he said he realized he was lucky to only have to come once a year. Thus, Colt’s Closet began.

He shared the idea with his mother and the idea was to help collect toys to take to the children in the hospital. Hospital staff allowed children to choose a toy each time they went for a procedure or examination.

Since this idea was put into action, Colt’s Closet has been able to collect and donate 7,800 toys for the children’s hospital, now called Prisma Healthcare.

“Every time we go to the hospital, I see kids picking from the closet,” Colt said. “Finally we were able to donate a new closet because the old one was falling apart. And so to see Colt’s Closet with the Colt’s Closet emblem on it, finally see those kids and the smiles on their faces when they come out really got me motivated.

Colt will be graduating from high school in May, and his goal is to have provided 10,000 toys to Children’s Hospital by then.

The Surfside Beach Chick-fil-A currently has a table set up in the restaurant where people can drop off an unboxed toy or donate money.

Those who donate $20 or more will receive a teddy bear to donate to Colt’s Closet or someone else.

Additionally, between 5 and 7 p.m. on Thursdays, when you mention Colt’s Closet when placing your order, a portion of the proceeds from your order will be donated to Colt’s Closet by the restaurant.

Colt said it was not his job, but God working through him.

“It’s really more of a God thing because I wouldn’t be able to do this without him and he gave me every opportunity to do it,” Colt said. “And so, with his help and especially the people around me and connecting with me and really helping me with my purpose and what I have a passion to do has really helped keep me going.”

By sharing his thoughts and involving others in his life such as family and friends, Colt’s Closet has brought a lot to children in difficult situations.
